Ahmed bin Hanbal was born in the year 164 AH in Baghdad and grew up there as an orphan. In that era, Baghdad was the capital of the Islamic world, full of different kinds of knowledge and arts. He asked for it in Baghdad with his sheikh, Hushaym bin Bashir Al-Wasiti until he died in the year 183 AH, and he remained in Baghdad asking for hadith until the year 186 AH, then he began his travels in asking for hadith, so he traveled to Iraq, the Hijaz, Tihama and Yemen, and he learned from many scholars and hadith scholars, and when he reached forty years in a year 204 A.H. He sat for updating and issuing fatwas in Baghdad, and people used to gather to study him until their number reached nearly five thousand.

Ibn Hanbal was famous for his patience with the ordeal that befell him, which was known as “the fitnah of the creation of the Qur’an.” It was a fitnah that took place in the Abbasid era during the reign of the caliph al-Ma’mun, then al-Mu’tasim and al-Wathiq after him. Hanbal and other scholars disagreed with that, so Ibn Hanbal was imprisoned and tortured, then released from prison and returned to modernization and teaching. In the month of Rabi` al-Awwal in the year 241 AH, Ahmed bin Hanbal fell ill and then died, at the age of seventy-seven years.
